Colorado River

Willow Beach is on the Colorado River south of Hoover/Boulder Dam.  This was the very first place I ever went trout fishing.  I caught the most fish that day and consequently I have never fished on the river again.  Imagine that!

Many years ago, before the dams were built, the Colorado river flowed freely & there were several steamers that were on the river coming from Yuma to ports north.

Here is an article about the river & the steamboats HERE.

"Vanished Arizona" was written by Martha Summerhayes and describes riding the boats up this river and her encounters in Arizona and can be found HERE.

  1. I read that book! I belonged to a book club when I lived in Yuma, and we read several books that related to the Southwest. Did you know that Yuma used to be very heavily forested until all the steamboat traffic -- requiring lots of wood to generate the steam. That usually surprises people because it is so barren, now.

  4. Gorgeous! I visited the Hoover Dam once many years ago, but didn't have the chance to venture further along the Colorado River. Hopefully in a future trip! Thanks for sharing the photo. Happy WW!
