Heartbroken/Devastated

This morning I was out watering......I don't have drip or sprinklers because it makes me get out there everyday......and when I headed back to this bed, I found this.  I was beside myself.  This happened to me last year and ruined a perfectly good cucumber vine.  I thought I had it fixed cause I put grates down and planted between the bars but low and behold, whatever it is, it still got to it.

These are the cucumbers.

A different view of the cucumbers.

Conglomeration of flowers were planted here.

I don't have any idea what could be doing this.  I know that there is a squirrel in the area.  There are also lizards.  Maybe some kind of bird.  It seems to happen at nighttime because I was home yesterday and sure didn't notice anything.  A longtime ago I saw a skunk in the yard.  It has to be something that roots around.

  1. That must be frustrating to have something damage your beautiful garden! It looks like you've put a lot of work into your beds.
I'm new here and found you through Blog guide book.

  2. I always debate whether the dogs help keep things (rabbits) out or if they do more damage than the wild critters. Trust me a lab mix and great Pyrenees can do a lot of damage! Hope the plants recover.

  3. I have trouble with skunks and raccoons digging for grubs, they even dig in my half whiskey barrels tearing up whatever is in them. I am thinking it is the skunk you saw.

  4. I have squirrels that do this kind of damage. They will climb up in my flower pots and dig as well. I love your grate idea though -- I could see how it could work around here!

  5. I hope this is just a one time digging. Are there any tracks around? Or (I hate to say it) droppings that you can identify the culprit? You may have to bury some mothballs in the soil for a while as deterrent.
